Nina Gummadi, a third-year medical student at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), has received a Fulbright Scholar Award to India. A Fulbright Scholar Award is one of the highest honors the federal government gives with regard to scholarship and international exchange. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. Born and raised in the metro Atlanta area until she was 10, Gummadi moved to India, living with her grandparents and siblings until she was 14. She then returned to Georgia to attend high school. Her four years in India were critical to her decision to pursue a Fulbright and spend a year in her parents' homeland.

Gummadi attended Boston University and received her undergraduate degree in medical sciences with a minor in anthropology. While interning at the Access Campaign at Doctors without Borders in Geneva, Switzerland, Gummadi was inspired by the global advocacy efforts for equitable health systems. As a medical student, she has served as a student leader for the Pediatrics Education & Development Society and PumpStart, a service learning group that teaches community CPR to Boston's high school students. In addition, Gummadi was the founder of the service learning branch of CALM (Cuddling Assists in Lowering Maternal and Infant Stress) a project to provide non-pharmacological care to infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome when caregivers are unavailable. Gummadi is also the BUSM delegate to the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Pediatrics Trainees.

Her Fulbright research aims to characterize mental health issues, as well as barriers to mental health care, in orphaned or otherwise abandoned children in India. The project will provide a basis on which screening protocols and interventions can be created for this at-risk population.

As part of her project, Gummadi has partnered with HEAL (Health and Education for All), a community organization that provides shelter, healthcare, education and support to underserved children in South India. The organization runs an orphanage that cares for more than over 1,000 children in the village of Thotapalli, where Gummadi will stay and complete her Fulbright research.

The Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries, and it is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. Since its beginnings in 1946, more than 360,000 Fulbrighters have participated in the Program, of whom a great number has resumed high leadership positions at university, state, community and industry levels.

Achanta Sharath clinches bronze medal in men's singles table tennis

After losing the mixed-doubles match for the bronze medal alongside Mouma Das on Sunday morning of the Commonwealth Games 2018, ace Indian paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal made sure he got it right in the men's singles circuit.

Sharath looked at his aggressive best, comfortably pocketing the opening two games. Sharath had also won a medal of a similar hue in New Delhi 2010.

Against Walker, Sharath produced an array of shots that caught the Englishman napping.

India will not have representation in the mixed doubles table tennis final at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) with both their pairs going down in their respective semi-finals here on Saturday.

Walker held momentum and threatened to take the fourth game as well, as he leveled the points and took the game into extension, but Sharath held his composure to hold on and emerge victorious.

India has had a great tournament so far, passing their Gold tally of Glasgow Games. He took the first two games 11-7, 11-9, but Walker regrouped and put the Indian on the backfoot.

The Final Day of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games brings to us the gold and bronze medal matches of all the racquet sports. This is Sharath Kamal's third medal at Gold Coast - one gold from mixed-team event, one silver alongside Gnanasekaran Sathiyan in men's doubles.

Sharath has now won a total of six medals in the Commonwealth Games, which includes four gold medals. He had missed out on a medal in Glasgow. The Indian continued his ruthless approach in the fourth game and wrapped up the tie in his favour despite Walker's respectable comeback in the match. India has already surpassed last edition's medal tally and will now hope to finish on a high.

Satya Nadella on Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People list

Love him or hate him, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been very effective at the helm of the Seattle software giant, and under his leadership, the company has gone from strength to strength, if not always in the direction its fans would prefer.

In recognition of his achievements, Satya Nadella has been honoured with a position on Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People list.

His bio for the article was written by Walter Isaacson, ex-managing editor for Time Magazine and famously the author of Steve Jobs’s authorized biography.

Writing about Nadella, he notes:

Growing up in India, Satya Nadella fell in love with cricket, a sport whose grace comes from melding stars into a cohesive and harmonic team. “One brilliant character who does not put team first can destroy the entire team,” he wrote in his recent book, Hit Refresh.

Since becoming CEO of Microsoft in 2014, Nadella has used those principles to restore the company’s spirit of innovation. Consider its new product strategy, which emphasizes cloud computing and allowing people to collaborate across platforms. Nadella also preaches the importance of empathy and making products that work reliably, traits that deepened in him when his first child was born with brain damage and his son’s life depended on linked machines running Microsoft systems.

The result is that in the four years since he inherited a sticky wicket, Microsoft’s market value has increased 130%. More important, the company is now making products that feel more user-friendly, empathetic and collaborative.

There are elements in Isaacson’s brief biography which I believe are arguable, but it is certainly difficult to argue with the recognition the company received from the stock market.

Aluminium alloy wheel manufacturer Synergies Castings has announced plans to set up a ₹650-crore greenfield alloy wheel making facility near the port city of Visakapatnam.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government earlier this year to establish an aluminium casting and speciality alloy wheel manufacturing facility.

The new greenfield facility, with an annual production capacity of 2.4 million units per annum, has been bench marked at 18 inch wheel size. It is expected to have sophisticated casting, machining, painting facilities with embedded digital manufacturing technologies.

This agreement sets the stage for building one of the largest single location alloy wheel manufacturing projects, with a facility to expand this to 5 million wheels per annum in multiple phases.

Shekhar Movva, President, Synergies Castings Limited, said: “As customer requirements become exceedingly more stringent, it is important to scale up and tech-up to remain competitive. The Project cost of $100 million will be financed by the existing shareholders, internal accruals and bank debt.”

“While we have evaluated several manufacturing locations in the country, we believe Vizag, and the terms of engagement with Andhra Pradesh offer the best opportunity in the competitive alloy wheels market,” he said.

Together with its ancillaries, this venture will provide more than 2000+ skilled jobs in the region.

This marks another step forward in the strategic growth of Synergies. Together with the ongoing expansion at the existing location, the new greenfield plant being built in Oman, and this proposed new greenfield, the company is on-course to achieving a 6-million-wheel per annum capacity by 2022-23.

Synergies unit located Vizag Special Economic Zone has been supplying to leading Original Equipment Manufacturers in India and overseas for more than 17 years. It supplies to major automotive companies, including General Motors-USA, Ford, Chrysler-USA, Tata Motors, Toyota amongst others.

Gundlapalli Prithvi gets prestigious Singapore National Award instituted by City State’s  founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew for academic excellence. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) also named an asteroid after him in recognition of Prithvi’s project.

Gundlapalli Prithvi, who hails from Hyderabad and is an alumnus of Hyderabad Public School (HPS), Begumpet, created history by being awarded the 2014 Lee Kuan Yew Award for all round achievement in Mathematics and Science in Singapore.

Prithvi recently received the award from Indranee Rajah, senior minister of state for ministry of law and for ministry of education, Singapore. The award was instituted in 1992 by donations made by Singapore's first and founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, to promote academic excellence in mathematics and science. Prithvi is the only student of Indian origin in recent years to get the national award at the junior college level.

In May 2013, Prithvi, while studying 12th class in Singapore, represented Singapore at the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) with his lithium ion battery research project. His research focused on tripling the capacity of rechargeable batteries and won two prizes at the ISEF. This was the beginning of the many laurels for Prithvi. The prominent among them was in December, 2013 when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) named an asteroid discovered by Lincoln Laboratory as 29575 Gundlapalli, in recognition of Prithvi winning the second place prize for his project at ISEF.

His research paper on the project was accepted and published by American Chemical Society in January this year. In July the Singapore government awarded the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (ASTAR) scholarship for Prithvi worth $ 25,000 a year to pursue his undergraduate degree in physics.

Pruthvi receiving the award from Indranee Rajah, senior minister of state for ministry of law and ministry of education, Singapore.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the world's largest international pre-college science competition which provides an annual forum for more than 1,500 high school students from about 70 countries, regions and territories to showcase their independent research as they compete for over $3 million annually. The Intel ISEF is the premier global science competition for students in grades 9–12.

Prithvi’s grandfather GG Chowdary, who is the president of Sri Power Gen (India) Pvt. Ltd, is jubilant.  Speaking about his grandson he said, “What Prithvi has done is really exciting. It is amazing that from such a young age Prithvi has been interested in science and doing research in that field. It would have been a different case if he wanted to become a doctor or a lawyer.  He has set the bar for the youngsters of our country to look up to. I hope youngsters of the country learn from him and push extremes to achieve their goals.”

Prithvi migrated to Singapore with his parents in 2002. He is currently enrolled in National Service in Singapore where he is training to be an officer at the Singapore Armed Forces' Officer Cadet School.

Prithvi has set his heart on doing further studies and research work in Quantum Computing and its related fields at Cambridge (UK) or MIT (USA). He also has an interest in Quantitative Finance. Incidentally his father G Sashikanth was also an alumnus of the Hyderabad Public School.

Four Kammas seafood companies line up 2500 cr IPOs

$

Four Indian seafood companies are trying to cash in on the booming shrimp exports by going for an IPO. In last few years, Indian seafood exports have been recouping losses suffered due to the punitive tariff imposed by the US in 2004 and the decline in capture fisheries with the help of vannamei shrimp production, which is cheaper than the traditional black tiger.

According to trade sources, Indian aquaculture production is estimated to touch a record seven lakh tonne during the current fiscal and reach one million tonne by 2020.

Nekkanti Sea Foods ( MD - Nekkanti VenkataRao), Devi Seafoods (MD - Potra  Brahmanandam), and Sandhya Marines (MD - Kondragunta  Venkata Prasad) have filed draft prospectuses with capital markets regulator SEBI. Another company, Devi Fisheries (MD - SuryaRao Yarlagadda), is also reported to be planning for a public listing. Most of the leading shrimp exporters are based in Andhra Pradesh where majority of the farms are located.

Devi Seafoods plans to raise `900 crore through an initial public offering while Sandhya Marines is looking to raise around Rs 500-600 crore. Nekkanti plans fresh issuance of shares worth `250 crore, besides an offer for sale of up to 80 lakh equity shares by the existing shareholders.

Nekkanti Venkat Rao, managing director of Nekkanti Sea Foods told FE that it makes sense to go public as the industry is worth more than Rs 30,000 crore .

“India is moving towards the second phase of growth which will be driven more by value addition. As we move from a commodity driven business to more of a value added business it is easy for a listed company ,which is more transparent and has better corporate governance, to do business with leading global companies,” he added.

He feels that India can be the shrimp capital of the world just like Norway is for Atlantic Salmon. “As the country grows, it becomes a natural supplier for the species and the whole demand gravitates towards that particular country. India has already 20-22% of the world shrimp trade. There are multiple factors that are driving India’s growth,” he added.

Nekkanti Sea Foods is among India’s leading processors and exporters of processed frozen shrimp products with over three decades of operations. In fiscal 2017, they had a volume share in the Indian shrimp industry of 2.49% with a value share of 3.31% of the total exports in such periods ,according to a Crisil report.

Devi Sea Foods was the second-largest exporter (in value terms) of seafood as well as for frozen shrimps from India during financial year 2016-2017.

However, entry of new players and countries in the supply chain has led to a glut in the market with shrimp prices in free fall. Some of the Indian farmers have not seeded their farms after incurring huge losses in the first quarter harvest.

Venkat Rao says that the potential is still huge as the country exports a large share of its production to countries like Vietnam for re-export after value addition. He believes that consolidation and moving up the value chain would help Indian processors garner more market share in the coming days.
