Nalagampalli Papudesi Chengalraya Naidu (6 Aug 1915 – 31 Jan 2012) born at Nalagampalle village near Chittoor, AP on August 6, 1915 to N. P. Venkataswamy Naidu and N.P.Savitri.
N.P. Chengalraya Naidu, known for his straightforward nature and political acumen, was the first Chairman of the District Board, Chittoor and also Member of Madras Legislative Council 1953-54. Member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly 1955 -62, Member of Lok Sabha 1967 -70 and Member of Rajya Sabha, 10-4-1978 to 9-4-1984.
He was Secretary, Andhra State Congress Committee, 1951-53, Vice-President, A.P.C.C., 1960-64 and General Secretary of the Janata Parliamentary Party 1978 – 86.
He had a chequered career in politics having had stints in all parties starting from Congress and then making forays into Janata Party and ending up with impromptu association with BJP till he retired from active politics more than a decade ago. His son Venkateswara Chowdary was former Chittoor MLA (TDP) in 1982
Smt. N.P.Savithramma College for Women was started in November 1982, at the initiative of N.P.Chengalraya Naidu. It is the unique in being first Women's college started in the Government Sector in the District with the objective of providing quality higher education to the poor & downtrodden women belonging to all sections, irrespective of caste, religion & social status of the region.
